When a group of women sits in a circle, each with a drum in front of them, something remarkable happens. At first, the beats are scattered, some rushing ahead, others holding back. It’s messy, imperfect, and human.

But then, as the sound begins to settle, you can feel a shift. People start to listen, really listen, to one another. The rhythm evens out. The bass tones and higher notes weave together. The group begins to breathe as one.

This is the moment I love most. Because in that space, it’s no longer about who’s “leading” or who’s “following.” It’s about finding a shared pulse and making space for everyone’s sound.

It reminds me of the way women have always stood for each other. Sometimes it’s loud, marching side by side, raising voices for change. Sometimes it’s quiet, a hand on the shoulder, an encouraging word, a silent understanding. But in every case, it’s about connection and trust.

In a drumming circle, you quickly learn that the music doesn’t work unless everyone’s contributing, and no one is left behind. If one person loses the beat, someone else picks it up and carries it until they find their place again. It’s the same in life. We show up for each other, fill in the gaps, and keep the rhythm going until everyone is strong enough to play again.

Standing in solidarity isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes it’s simply about holding the rhythm steady so someone else can shine. It’s about trusting that when you need to step back, the women around you will carry the beat until you return.

Every time I see this unfold in a drumming session, I’m reminded that we already have what we need to support one another on a deeper level: a willingness to listen, the courage to step forward when needed, and the grace to step back when it’s someone else’s turn.

In rhythm, we prove something powerful. We can always rely on each other.

August is Women’s Month, a time to acknowledge and uplift women’s voices, leadership, and contributions. At Drum Cafe Cape Town, we’re proud to join the celebration with immersive African drumming experiences that inspire confidence and connection.
